1982 Series III 109 Station Wagon
Service and minor upgrades
This Series III 109 was built in the UK. It was quite well done, but the new owner wants a few changes to make it his own and to make it just that much better. To that end we have gone over the 109 here at the shop and come up with a few things that need to be done. We will also be making a few changes to personalize the 109 for the new owner. The first step is a full front to back service and inspection of all the systems. We will then repair anything that needs it to make it ready to head out to the new owner's place in Montana.
The bulkhead in the 109 is in great shape, but it needs a little dressing up. We will be installing a layer of sound reduction materials and then trimming out the interior like a factory built Station Wagon. This will make it a little quieter and look more finished off as well. We will also be adding modern shoulder inertia seat belts and more. Stay tuned for a completed interior image.
Once on the lift the Rover gets all new fluids where they are needed and all the required adjustments and made. This 109 needs very little, very rare for an older Series Rover, but this one is in great shape.
This image shows the interior with a little more "finishing". The correct hardura trims have been installed over a layer of dynamat and then the factory floor mats have been installed. Its a small change, but it helps to make the interior of the 109 look a little less "erector set-like".
One change that the owner wanted was to move the spare tire from the hood to the rear door. The simple answer is to simply install the old Series Rover parts and be done with it, but we know from experience that those parts have flaws. Firstly, the original parts position the spare tire too far down, or too low, on the door. This causes the spare to hit the ground while off roading and makes trailer use a pain. Secondly, the original parts cause the welds in the door frame itself to crack and eventually make lots of noise and cause door failure. The answer to all these problems is to use the Defender style rear tire carrier and weld in two cross supports to take the weight. In the image above you can see the two new cross supports, galvanized metal, have been welded in place and the holes for the tire carrier have been drilled. Next up we will prime and paint these areas, install the tire carrier and then re-install the interior trim panel.
When it is all said and done, this is what it looks like. The tire is still in a very "Series Rover" looking place, but all the down sides of the original tire carrier have been eliminated. In this image you can also see that we have added a set of new tires so that the 109 can handle anything put in front of it out west.
Here you can see the Series III 109 all cleaned up and ready to head out west to offer years of service to the new owner on his property in MT. The truck looks great and after just having been looked over by ECR we know that it will performs as good as it looks.
